Pathé: The Motor Skater

The National Archives education team’s film of the month highlights a Pathé film relating to current events, anniversaries or key topics that you may be covering in the classroom.
This month’s clip is ‘The Motor Skater’ or ‘Juggins’ Motor Skates’ – a short comedic film from 1909.
With this film, students could consider:
•    What was early film like? How easy was it to produce?
•    What is happening in the first scene? Why are the characters acting in this way?
•    Can you describe the product? Are there similarities and differences to modern skates and scooters?
•    What does this video show us about life in the 1900s?
This film could be used for Media Studies exploration of early film, alongside our Focus on Film topic website
