British Malaya

Diplomatic and Colonial Records Specialist Dr Dan Gilfoyle discusses some of the stand-out images from the Colonial Office Library’s photographic collection, recently digitised and put online by The National Archives for its ‘Asia through a Lens’ project.

In this podcast, Dan focuses on images from the former British territories in the Malay Peninsula that eventually came to form the part of modern-day Malaysia.

The photographs in this part of the collection illustrate aspects of landscape, economic development and architecture in the states of British Malaya from the 1870s to the mid-20th century. Photographs include people from some of the ethnic groups which made up the population of the Malay Peninsula by the late 19th century.
