Sessions for Schools: The case for the Trade

An 18th century slave trader (played by actor Andrew Ashmore) puts the case against the growing abolition movement to end the transatlantic slave trade. It is part of the preparation for students participating in “This Evil Trade: Olaudah Equiano and Abolition”.

Delivered as a taught session here at Kew or by videoconference, students will work with original documents to find evidence that will refute the arguments of wealthy traders in favour of continuing Britain’s trade in slaves. Led by a costumed interpreter playing the prominent abolitionist and writer Olaudah Equiano they will build a case to support the abolition of slavery in Britain’s colonies.
