Contemporary records specialists Mark Dunton and Simon Demissie discuss highlights from the latest batch of government files released to The National Archives. Rounding off Mrs Thatcher’s first term in office, 1983 was another pivotal year in British politics.

The Falklands factor helped propel the Conservative Party to a second successive election victory, but Mrs Thatcher faced economic challenges at home and increased tension abroad. This was the year that American cruise missiles arrived at Greenham Common, the US invaded Grenada and the Cold War got colder.
